PERFORMANCE OF THIS MULTIMEDIA PIECE AT CALDMORE SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER
10TH
Composer Elizabeth
Purnell has been commissioned by Bristol arts charity Elektrodome to compose
and devise a piece to be developed in collaboration with the children
of Class 6 and their teacher, Trudy Walker, at Caldmore Community Primary
School, Carless Street, Caldmore, Walsall. The Project – which will
involve the children in exploring the Soundbeam electronic music and multi-media
live performance technology - has the enthusiastic support of the head
teacher, Mrs Nola Boulger, and of Mike Parrott (Group Controller of Arts
and Development, Walsall Education Authority).
Elizabeth Purnell
has devised a music and multimedia piece with Class 6 about rainforests,
entitled ‘Forest Song’. This ties in with the pupils’
studies of this subject in their lessons with their teacher, Trudi Walker
Using Soundbeam, real
bird and animal calls of the rainforest are ‘played’ by the
pupils and huge atmosperes created. During the course of the project,
the pupils have contributed their own recordings of percussion and other
instruments, sound effects from the playground, as well as video footage
shot around the school which will form a stunning visual aspect of the
piece. During the course of the piece there will also be a dance, devised
by Trudi Walker, an atmospheric ‘Forest Song’, and poems and
narrations written by the students.
The story starts with
the birds of the rainforest minding their own business, when one day they
are shocked to see a man come along and chop down a tree. This sends shockwaves
through the animal community, and they decide to take a journey to the
city to plead with the humans to stop destroying their habitat, but they
do n’t like what they see when they get there...
